More about Solar Kits

As we have previously explained, the solar kits that we can find are mainly divided into two categories:

Solar kits for off-grid: it refers in its multiple variants to those kits to power systems that do not have a network connection. They can be from rural houses, caravans, pumping systems to remote communication towers.

Solar grid connection kits: it also refers in its multiple variants to those kits to power, generate savings over the grid or provide some support to those systems that are connected to the general electrical grid. Usually we refer to houses or single-family homes, neighborhood communities, warehouses or any type of property connected to the network.

But What do solar kits include?

Depending on each typology there will be some different elements, but in general we can find:

Solar panels: Solar panels are responsible for converting solar radiation into direct electric current. For solar kits, each solar panel has a unit power that can be greater than 300Wp. If you look, the power of the solar panels is described as Wp (peak watts). Since the panels will not produce the same in one place on the planet or in another (greater or lesser solar radiation), and in one inclination or another, a reference power is set. The peak power of a solar panel refers to the power it is capable of giving under standard conditions (STC). These conditions stipulate the solar panel power under 1000W / m2 of incident radiation on its surface and a solar cell temperature (non-ambient) of 25ºC. That is why the mounting conditions and solar radiation must be taken into account to correctly size the Solar Self-Consumption Kit.

At Tienda Solar we make sure that the solar panels of our solar kits are of world reference brands (also called Tier 1). This group called Tier 1 encompasses brands such as Trina Solar, Canadian Solar, REC Solar and others; brands that can be purchased on our website.

Solar Inverter: The solar inverter is in charge of transforming the direct current generated by the solar panels into alternating current, which is what the appliances and household appliances in our house or warehouse work with. Solar inverters are classified according to their nominal power in alternating watts since it is their limiting factor, although they may occasionally give higher power peaks. It is important to note that the DC part is usually oversized by connecting more panels (peak power) than the nominal power of the solar inverter. This is due, as we have seen previously, to the fact that the nominal power of solar panels is defined under certain conditions that do not have to be met continuously. For this reason, we can oversize the part of the solar panels with greater power than the inverter, depending on what the manufacturers of the inverters dictate can reach up to 50% of oversized. It is for this reason that the solar kits have a peak power (from solar panels) higher than the nominal power of the inverter.

In this case, we must differentiate that an off-grid solar kit must work with an inverter for this application, while a grid connection Kit must operate with a different one destined for the corresponding application. Being the inverter off-grid from a power that does not have to be proportional to the power of solar panels. That is, we can find, for example, a 3000W solar kit that has a 3000W solar inverter but that mounts 1000W of solar panels. However, we will never find a grid connection inverter that has a power much greater than the sum of the power of the solar panels that make up its kit. Solar inverters usually have a monitoring system that allows the production of the solar installation to be seen and to diagnose if there are any operational problems. It is common for investors today to have a mobile app to remotely see how it works. Additionally, off-grid solar kits and some grid connection kits can have the following components:

Mounting system: The mounting system consists of a series of metal rails (usually made of aluminum) on which the solar panels are mounted. Once the panels are mounted, they are fixed to the rails by means of aluminum clamps. The mounting systems are anchored to the roof on which you want to install the solar panels. Depending on the cover, one or the other anchors will be used. Although there are several types of mounting systems for panels, the most widely used are the so-called "coplanar" and "inclined" ones. In our blog post you can get more information about their differences. Solar kits usually come with a coplanar system that allows them to be mounted on the same plane of the roof, taking advantage of the inclination of the roof. These systems are easy to assemble and allow the working time on the roof to be as short as possible and therefore the final cost of the solar installation for self-consumption. Mounting systems are usually the same for both off-grid and grid-connected solar kits.

Occasionally, since solar panels for off-grid applications may be smaller in size than those for grid connection, there may be some smaller mounting systems for off-grid kits to fit the size of your solar panels.

Batteries: They are in charge of temporarily storing the energy generated by the installation to later use it for consumption at home or in the industrial warehouse. The batteries, depending on the chosen kit, can be lithium or lead-acid based with their different aspects. It is important that, depending on the technology used, the solar kit and the consumption needs are correctly sized. Lithium batteries can reach depths of discharge (DOD- Depth of Discharge) of up to 80%, while lead-acid batteries should not exceed 50%. It is also important to note that the use of batteries in our solar installation will force us to have to perform some maintenance on them or even replace them after certain years. The type of maintenance and the replacement time of the solar batteries will depend on the chosen technology, as well as the intensity of use of the same (number of charge-discharge cycles).

Charge regulator: solar kits that have batteries either connected to the grid or off-grid have a solar charge regulator. This can be a separate component or it can come integrated with the inverter. The main functionality of the solar regulator is to adjust the generation parameters of the solar panels so that the batteries can be charged safely without damaging them. Depending on the size of the necessary solar installation, the solar kits incorporate a PWM regulator or an MPPT regulator. In any case, each solar kit specifies which regulator technology is incorporated according to the needs of each use.

Warranty of the components of the Solar Kits

Both solar grid and off-grid solar kits have a manufacturer's guarantee. Each component has its conditions and is specified according to the product and its brand. In any case, below we generally and habitually explain what guarantees each component includes:

Solar panels: The product warranty usually ranges from 5 to 15 years, depending on the manufacturer. This warranty covers any manufacturing defect of the module regarding its functionality and all its parts. Additionally, solar panels have an additional guarantee called “production”. This guarantee stipulates that the solar panel must have a degradation of its power in a programmed and planned way throughout its useful life. Usually the production guarantee is 25 years and manufacturers usually guarantee that their panels will give a power of 80% of the nominal power after 25 years. The decrease in power is gradual and each manufacturer stipulates in the technical sheets how this power should be reduced over time.

Solar inverters: The guarantee of solar inverters varies according to whether they are grid-connected or off-grid. Off-grid investors tend to have product warranties of 2 to 5 years and it is unusual for manufacturers to have warranty extensions. Grid connection inverters and especially the top brand ones usually have a 5-year product warranty that can be extended for 5, 10 or up to 15 years additionally. Importantly, warranty extensions of 10 years or more typically cost roughly the same as exchanging the inverter and purchasing a new one. In any case, these warranty extensions can be considered in special situations where the reliability and safety of the installation is paramount.

Mounting system: The mounting systems are robust, safe and very reliable. Under the loading conditions for which they are designed, they can last up to 25 years and especially if they are made of aluminum and / or stainless steel. The manufacturers of structures usually give a minimum of 10 years of guarantee, although depending on each case it can be only 5 years or up to 15 years. For more information consult the technical data sheet of each Kit and its references to the guarantees of each component.

Batteries: Batteries are a critical element in solar kits for isolation and due to their high price it is advisable to pay special attention to the guarantees offered by different manufacturers. The guarantee offered by each brand will depend on the technology of the batteries. It is usual for lead acid batteries to have a 1 year warranty, whether they are AGM technology or not. Stationary accumulators usually have a 2 year warranty, while lithium batteries can last up to 7 years. Again, it is important to verify with the manufacturer's technical data sheet the guarantees offered for each product. Sometimes it makes sense to buy a little more expensive batteries if this ensures a better guarantee for years to come.
