SMA (SMA AG) is a German inverter company founded more than 40 years ago in the town of Niestetal, with a long history in the design and manufacture of electronic components. SMA has more than 3,000 workers and annual turnover of more than 750 million euros (2018).

Thousands of 100 kW Sunny Central inverters continue to operate in Spain after their massive installation in 2007 and 2008, in the first Spanish photovoltaic boom, after more than 12 years of operation.
Already in smaller sizes, SMA has developed the residential and commercial line of small power (1.5 kW to 6 kW-single-phase) with its well-known Sunny Boy. Although it brought to market Sunny Boy microinverters of lower power (240 and 250W) these had little commercial success and ended up being removed from the catalog. The Sunny boy, in the current range, is a “transformerless” technology inverter, very small in size and weight (6kg), robust, very reliable with a remarkable performance compared to most of its competitors. SMA offers high-end products always with their corresponding price.
The initial manufacturer warranty is 10 years, but you can get extensions of warranties of 5 or 10 additional years, and up to 25 years of warranty. At the residential user level, SMA has developed technology in its solar inverters that allows it to approach its products in a more friendly way. The different mobile applications that connect their inverters with the residential user allow SMA solutions to be intuitive and easy to understand solar solutions. For larger sizes SMA has developed the Sunny Tripower range for three-phase connections. Small and medium power SMA Tripower (3kW up to 25kW) are a very good choice for higher power residential installations and medium solar plants for industrial use. The SMA tripower range includes, in addition to monitoring and services (SMA Smart), the active management of solar panel shading, achieving higher installation efficiencies. The flexible MPPT’s management system allows your solar installation to always work at the most optimal point of solar generation.
Both the SMA inverters of the Sunny Boy or Sunny Tripower range are very easy to install with Plug & Play connections and detailed online material so that installing a solar inverter is a simple and grateful task. It is interesting to note that the solar inverters of these ranges have automatic software updates (as long as the inverter is connected to the internet) and it is expandable with a storage system (solar batteries) and energy management systems.
SMA also has inverters for off-grid or hybrid systems. Historically SMA has been a pioneer in these two types of solar installations but especially in large-scale hybrids (those that manage various energy sources such as diesel / solar / solar batteries). For these off-grid and / or hybrid systems SMA has its Sunny Island.
